The latest xkcd is a great homage to a Discovery Channel commercial that pays homage to a classic campfire song. However, there are a lot of internal references to the comic that a lot of people may not understand. So, because the comics are released under a Creative Commons license, I’m able to cut apart the panels using The Gimp and have each frame of the comic link to the original comic that it’s referencing.

An abbreviated history of internet stupidity
June 25th, 2008 · No Comments
Back when the internet and e-mail was new, we slowly began to see the emergence of a plague on the internet. No, I’m not talking about Sasser or MSBlast or Melissa. I’m talking before any of that. Back when AOL completely dominated everyone’s 28.8 modems, we saw the formidable rise of chain letters. Naturally, they [...]

The government wants to monitor your credit card transactions
June 19th, 2008 · 1 Comment
I just finished reading Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, so maybe I’m a bit paranoid of the government right now, but even if I hadn’t, I think this has BAD IDEA written all over it.
Buried deep in a Senate bill for housing financing reform created because of the subprime adjustable rate mortgage crisis, there’s a [...]

I hate Tom Waits
June 14th, 2008 · No Comments
I don’t care how much of a genius he apparently is, he can go screw for all I care.
I don’t even mind the voice that was apparently created by gargling with coffee and eating cigarettes, I can get around that. It’s his post-modern nonsense that I can’t stand. Take this latest interview with him in the Independent. It’s even worse than his music; it’s completely unreadable. It’s so full of ridiculous lists, I thought I had slipped and started reading House of Leaves again. Actually, I take that back. This interview is what you would get if House of Leaves were written by Rain Man.

Jesus, Senator McCain, people are going to just feel sorry for you. I mean, I do.
June 13th, 2008 · No Comments
McCain has been irritated that Obama keeps saying that he’s running for Bush’s third term and that he’s trying to run against Bush and not McCain. McCain says that couldn’t be further from the truth. ORLY?
It’s McCain 2008 vs. McCain 2005! McCain 2008 says that he’s nothing like George W. Bush. McCain 2005 says that [...]
A couple of things that don’t suck
June 9th, 2008 · No Comments
One of the things about the Information Age that is good is how it’s empowered the little guy to do things that once only giant companies were able to do before. Of course, that’s also one of the bad things about the Information Age. But I digress. Movies that died an untimely death due to [...]

Kmart sells draw string sweatpants with abstinence message
June 7th, 2008 · No Comments
I’m thinking the same thing you are right now, “Kmart’s still around?” Apparently they are, and they’re selling draw string sweatpants that say “True Love Waits” on the left thigh, and right across the ass. There’s nothing like trying to sell not having sex than by putting a message like that on pants that can come off in half a second and in a place that makes people stare at your ass and crotch.

“Michelle Obama gave birth to an illegitimate black child,” and other nonsense.
June 6th, 2008 · No Comments
This is just classy. While the rumor of there being some tape of Michelle Obama using the term “whitey” has been around for a couple weeks, it’s gotten worse since Tuesday when Obama locked up the nomination. It reached critical mass yesterday when Barack Obama was asked about it by a reporter. Until then, it [...]
FiOS woes
June 3rd, 2008 · No Comments
I’ve finally got FiOS installed, and I’ve got to say, so far I’m extremely underwhelmed by the experience.
First off, the modem is now installed in my bedroom, so now I have to rely on 802.11g to transmit stuff. Not even 802.11n, that sucks. Connecting FIOS to wireless is like taking a fire hose and throttling it into a garden hose.

Word of the day: Nonpology
June 2nd, 2008 · No Comments
According to the Urban Dictionary, the nonpology is “an insincere apology or expression of regret, often blaming the aggrieved party for being offended or bringing up an irrelevant topic to distract.”
While that’s a pretty succinct definition, I think that it’s leaving some nuance out of it, especially with regard to recent trends in nonpologies. The most recent nonpology comes from Vice President Cheney, after his comments where he said that he had Cheneys on both side of his family tree, and that he wasn’t even from West Virginia.
