Today is the day Democrats have a chance to put the farce to rest. Of course, you just know that ain’t going to happen as long as you have both the media and the dittoheads doing everything they can to prevent that. Even if that means breaking the law to do it.
First thing on the docket is the vote grab that is this ridiculous gas tax holiday that Senator McCain came up with and Hillary supports. Obama supported something for Illinois back in 2000 and it was pretty much a colossal failure. I’m guessing Obama learned the lesson. The benefits were spread so thin that no one really benefited, but it damn near bankrupted the government. See a detailed analysis of it over here.
Let’s just do a bit of calculation ourselves. The break is 18.4 cents a gallon. and would run from Memorial Day to Labor Day, or fifteen weeks. Let’s assume that a person fills up the vehicle once a week and that the average tank size is about seventeen gallons. 18.4 cents times 15 times 17 is $46.92. Over the course of the entire summer, the average driver would be saving less than fifty bucks. Wow, now I’ll be able to put a down payment on a house! What effect would that have on the federal government, though. A government that’s in the middle of paying for a war? Let’s assume that 2/3 of the people in the U.S drive, and that there are, on average, 300,000,000 people in the U.S. That’s 200,000,000 drivers saving. Multiply that by $46.92 and you get $9.38 billion dollars. That’s billion with a Carl Sagan capital B.
That’s definitely the amount of money the fed would lose. But drivers may be actually saving less. Why? Because if gas gets a bit cheaper, then people might drive a little more. If people drive a little more, they use a little more gas. If they use a little more gas, then demand goes up. If demand goes up with the supply staying the same, then prices will go up, which will cut into the amount that people are saving.
Obama thinks this get-(not very) rich (at all)-scheme reeks of a cheap vote grab, and it is. But what’s his solution? Oh, nothing much. Just brokering a truce between Nigerian rebels and the government to increase supply. Seriously, other than bombing the everliving hell out of brown people, can you think of anything more presidential than convincing hated enemies to put down their guns and stop killing each other for OUR benefit?!
The second thing I want to address is this entire elitism nonsense going around.
Maybe I’m strange. I don’t want the “leader of the free world” to be an average Joe, someone I would feel comfortable having a beer with. We’ve seen what happens when we vote based on that.
I want the elected official that represents us to the world to be freaking brilliant, charismatic, and diplomatic. I want that person to be not just better than average, I want that person to be the absolute best our country has to offer. Look at the friends you play Rock Band with. Look at your drinking buddies. Look at your co-workers. Would you really want those people representing you and 300 million others to the entire world? I’m not saying that they’re bad people, but don’t you think we could do better than that?
If you’re a Democratic resident of Indiana or North Carolina, go vote today. If you’re a Republican in those states? You go vote too. Just do it in your own primary.
