Ever since it’s come out, people have been lamenting Windows Vista as a collossal failure and just a big pile of suck overall. I’m not going to argue the failure part, as that much seems apparent. The big pile of suck part? I’ve got some issues with that.
I’m not going to say it’s the best thing since sliced bread, but for newer computers that have the RAM to handle it, it’s pretty good. And it’s a good deal safer than XP.
One of the biggest complaints about Vista that I’ve heard is that it asks you for your password all the time. That’s not a negative. That’s a good thing. If you don’t normally have the administrative access to do something, then any sort of malware that infects your system won’t have access to do those things either. And you know what? Both Mac OSX and Linux requiure a root password to install/change system files too, so Windows is actually late to the game on that frontl. Yeah, asking for a password to delete a shortcut on the desktop is mildly annoying, but you can go in and change the behavior of User Account Control in the settings.
Another huge complaint is just how much of a resource hog it is. This I will grant. It’s almost as bad as Firefox 2 in that regard. That said, pretty much everyone already knows this and memory is getting pretty damn cheap so I don’t see why this is such a big deal. This computer has 4 GB of RAM and it only cost me a hundred to upgrade from the default of 2GB. Eighteen months ago it would have cost me twice that, easily! If you’ve got an old machine, stick with XP, or preferably Linux.
